An air conditioning unit uses the energy in the air around it and because this air is free it makes the unit very efficient.

For every 1kw of electricity that is used to power the air conditioning unit, typically 3-4kw of heating or cooling is generated.

The term air conditioning generally relates to cooling but it can also refer to heating or ventilation of your indoor environment. An air conditioning unit is essentially a refrigerator which removes heat from one area, discharging it into another.

The unit contains a compressor which drives refrigerant through two coils; one hot and one cold. The warm air in the room is taken into the compressor and passed over the cold coil, which cools and dries it. This cool air is then blown into the room and the hot air is expelled outside.

Ideally Heating and Air Conditioning equipment should be serviced every six months. However in business critical areas should be serviced every 3 months.

The indoor unit air filters, drip trays and condensate drains are all cleaned. The indoor coils are cleaned if required and treated with anti-bacterial coil cleaner. A thorough check of all refrigerant circuits is made as is a review of the running currents of all fan motors and compressors.

The primary function of any Air Conditioning system is to provide a comfortable indoor climate whatever the external conditions, and that can mean heating and cooling. There is lots of evidence to show that the indoor environmental quality in schools is an important factor in supporting learning. The indoor environmental quality means lighting, acoustics, water quality and air quality – meaning temperature, humidity, odours and pollutants.

Air conditioners also contain anti-fungus filters so they provide air purification by cleaning and freshening the air in your working environment.

To operate at optimum efficiency a system should be designed to suit the operational needs of the building. The following should be taken into account

Yes they can. Systems that heat as well as cool are referred to as heat pump systems.

Since 1st January 2015, it has been illegal to use R22 refrigerant to maintain or repair air conditioning systems in the UK. It is not illegal to run a system using R22 however if it breaks down the repairs could be costly and inefficient with drop-in refrigerants. Consequently it would be wise to plan for the replacement of an R22 system.

For more information on the R22 Phase Out or for further information on refrigerants please contact us.

An air conditioning energy inspection known as TM44 is required if the effective rated output of the systems within a building are more than 12kW. The inspection, which is carried out by an independent energy assessor, is required every 5 years. A fine of £300 can be levied if a building owner or manager is found without an up to date report.

An independent energy inspection or TM44 will include a visual assessment of your air conditioning system and an examination of your air conditioning equipment, controls and documentation. Full access to equipment must be afforded by the building owner. The aim of the inspection is to review the system’s energy performance under the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations. There is also a requirement to confirm that there is no Legionella risk as required by the Health (Legionella) Regulations 2001.

If you are uncertain whether you require an energy inspection or for more information on what an energy inspection entails, please contact our Air Conditioning team on 01283 523849. You will never be lost in an automated telephone system – we always get you through to our experts.

Yee Group can arrange for an accredited assessor to carry out the assessment and compile a report showing the current efficiency of your equipment, suggestions for improving its efficiency, and how to reduce your air conditioning usage. You can choose not to follow all the recommendations suggested in the report, however you may save money if you do so.
