Improving Site Security for Darker Months

Security becomes an even higher priority for building and estates managers during darker winter nights. Reduced visibility, quieter sites, and extended hours of darkness can significantly increase the risk of unauthorised access, whilst also highlighting safety concerns for employees and visitors. Investing in the right security infrastructure is a practical way to protect people, property, and peace of mind. Yee Group recently completed a car park barrier upgrade for Manston Investments in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. The project involved replacing an ageing system with a modern, more secure solution, supported by new groundworks and a reinforced concrete base to ensure long-term reliability.

Yee Group recently completed a car park barrier upgrade for Manston Investments in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. The project involved replacing an ageing system with a modern, more secure solution, supported by new groundworks and a reinforced concrete base to ensure long-term reliability.

A new CAME illuminated automatic access barrier was installed, significantly improving visibility for approaching vehicles in low-light conditions. To enhance operational safety, the system was fitted with new safety PIR sensors, providing obstacle detection and reducing the risk of vehicle or pedestrian impact during barrier operation.

From an access control perspective, the barrier is operated via a Paxton access reader, allowing authorised users to gain entry using secure credentials. In addition, the system has been configured to accept calls from pre-approved mobile phone numbers, enabling controlled remote access without compromising security. This dual-method approach provides flexibility while maintaining a clear control over authorised entry.

As darker nights increase reliance on artificial lighting and automated access systems, it is essential that installations are designed with both security and safety in mind. Upgrading legacy barriers with illuminated, sensor-protected, and access-controlled systems can significantly reduce unauthorised access risks while improving day to day safety for staff and visitors.

For estates and facilities managers, reviewing perimeter access infrastructure during winter months is a proactive step toward maintaining secure, compliant, and reliable safe sites.
